Our Story
"Dixieland Express" is an authentic Dixieland / New Orleans jazz ensemble and was formed in 1990 by its founder Clem Meehan. The band was formed as the support act for the world famous 'Dutch Swing College Band' concert of that year. Dixieland Express?
In the late 80's, Tasmania hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships. As part of the entertainment, the renowned Don Burrows featured as a special guest artist. Clem was asked to augment the musical line-up. One of the musos on the bus travelling to the gig, greeted Clem with "Welcome aboard the Dixieland Express" - "Hmm that's not a bad name for a band..." A band was duly formed and has been entertaining fans throughout the length and breadth of Tasmania, impressing audiences with their unique style and creative musical talents ever since.
